The Story

Tayammum on Hard Soil (Tayammum al-Ṣa‘īd al-Ṣalbah):

Tayammum Hard Soil, Tayammum is the Islamic practice of dry ablution, performed with clean earth when water is unavailable or cannot be used due to health or other valid reasons.

When performed on hard soil, it means striking or wiping the hands on clean, natural ground that is firm and solid, such as dry clay, compact earth, or any clean surface of soil that is not dusty enough to leave particles. Scholars agree that tayammum is valid on hard soil as long as it is considered part of the earth (ṣa‘īd) and is pure (ṭāhir).

Description of performing Tayammum on hard soil:

  1. Intention (niyyah): Intend to perform tayammum for purification.

  2. Strike the soil: Place both palms lightly on the surface of the hard soil.

  3. Wipe the face: Pass both hands across the entire face once.

  4. Strike again: Place both palms again on the soil.

  5. Wipe the arms: Wipe the right arm up to the elbow with the left hand, and then the left arm with the right hand.
